The Formal Biking Event Proved Successful

The Formal Biking Event proved to be successful despite the rain. We didn’t count the number of present bikers but it looked that there were more than 100 enthusiast cyclists.

The Sofia Mayor, Yordanka Fandakova, welcomed the participants in front of the Aleksander Nevski Cathedral and promised more and better bike paths in the near future. More than that, Mr. Dietrich Becker representing the German Embassy, Mr. Martijn Elhersa representing the Dutch Empassy, and Mr. Ken Moskovits – Deputy Public Affairs U.S. Embassy – were present and gave speeches in front of the big crowd as well. They encouraged biking and shared their personal biking experiences from different countries all over the world.

We managed to make a short clip with the bikers passing on Georgi Rakovski Street and reaching the finish line in front of the Soviet Army Memorial. As you can see, everyone was cheerful despite the rain. Some of the drivers even honked to show their gratitude to this green and healthy way of transportation.

Good luck to the VeloEvolution Association with their next projects. We’re looking forward to attending more of their initiatives.

It was a good experience. To be honest I was impressed with the number of people that actually showed up. Even though I saw some drivers not being so happy with the suspended traffic, the whole event was an important step for the biking community in Sofia…
